My '06 Toyota Aurion SX6 Sportivo

Bericht door Kiwi-Corolla »

Welcome, and cheers for viewing my build thread! I bought this car in May '15 and didn't really plan on doing any mods to it, but as we all know, things often don't stay standard for very long. I've always liked these cars, so when I finally had the chance to buy one I opted for this '06 SX6 Sportivo model.

It came with 18" TRD wheels, but apart from that it was all stock. It's not very often you see modified Aurions here in New Zealand so it leaves people wondering what the hell it is, while still blending in as a family sedan at the same time. The car now wears 19x9.5" Vertini Magic concave wheels, along with an array of other mods that contribute to the overall look of the build.

This post will stay updated with the most recent mods & photos, but the rest from post #2 onward are in chronological order.

Thanks for all the kind words and feedback everyone! It's quite a lot different to what I'd been used to with my Corolla and feels a lot larger to drive, but having that much power on tap is certainly nice.

Cheers man. I appreciate your honesty. The factory centre console trim is all silver, which I found was pretty bland, so I decided to mix it up a bit by adding in the fake wood from a Touring model. It's the only one I've seen with the almost real looking wood effect to it. If you don't like that then you'd HATE the glossy wood one from the Grande model . The red badge is one of those small touches that I love looking at every time I approach the car. I ordered them from overseas and it sticks inside the original Toyota badge (comes in specific sizes for the car). I also ordered one for my partner's Toyota Wish (except in blue) and a red one for my Dad's Toyota Blade Master G.

Oh, believe me, if this car was ever offered in a manual variant I would have chosen it for sure! 8-). My Corolla was a manual and I owned that for 6-years, so I quite miss changing gears with an actual gear shifter, but it's cruel trade off really :)

Thanks mate. I've always taken quite a minimalist approach in regards to modifications, where less equals more, if that makes sense :)

Re: My '06 Toyota Aurion SX6 Sportivo

The Aurion got some attention in the weekend, starting off with wrapping the center console in a bronze/gold carbon fiber vinyl. The console had to be disassembled in individual pieces to be wrapped properly, so lining up the stripes was a bit of a pain, but with a bit of patience the end result was worth it.

Continuing on with the carbon theme, I chucked this billet aluminium TRD style oil cap on. I really like the design of this cap, and although it's purely aesthetic, I think it compliments the rest of the engine bay nicely.

After wrapping the center console, curiosity got the better of me and I decided to try and wrap one of my spare engine covers. Well, lets just say it was considerably more difficult than the console, and cutting around the non-removable letters wasn't fun, but the end result looks pretty sweet so the effort paid off :)

You have a really, really nice ride there mate!! :)
I'm just wondering for a thing my eyes cought on.. I see that you have three children seats on the backseat: two frontwards and one rearwards. Are these some special ones or just standard seats which you have positioned like this? My sister has a bit of questionmarks how to handle the situation with three little children for over half a year ;) They have a twins of about 10 months now and is pregnant for the third one... They're driving a Renault Megane (if you now what kind of car that is..?) which might even be smaller than your Aurion. But they're thinking of buying another car like an MPV or something to fit the three children in.. But when it's possible to get a solution like you have there, would save a lot of money! :)

Thanks mate 8-). Good spotting! Yes those are 3 car seats in the back of the Aurion. It's a tight squeeze but they all manage to fit in (something I could only dream of in my Corolla). We have an almost 5yo son, a 3.5yo girl and a 7-month old girl, so they keep us quite busy :). My partner's car is a 2004 Toyota Wish, which is mainly what we drive when we take the whole family out since it's a 7-seater. The beauty of it though is that it's the same size as a station wagon which makes it light and easy to maneuver. We bought it at the beginning of this year, completely stock standard, but in my typical fashion I couldn't leave things stock for very long and set to making it stand out from other Wish's on the road. I actually went and took some photos of it this morning, so I'll post them at the bottom of this post ;)

And then I guess that these 3 seats are just standard children seats, nothing special to put three next to eachother in the back seat of a car? If I'm right the Aurion is a (let's say) standard-size sedan and not a really big one.. So I suppose it should also be possible to get three seats in the back of a European brand sedan (Renault in the case of my sister's)..?
If so, she'll be glad, cause they were already looking to buy another car like a MPV or something cause they were worried that three seats wouldn't fit in the back of their car.. :P

Thanks! The blue was quite a hard colour to find, but as luck would have it, as soon as we bought it we saw two other blue ones in our neighbourhood..... The Wish has become a very popular wagon here in New Zealand, which is probably why I was so hell bent on making hers stand out from the rest

Yep, standard type car seats, no special rail or angle grinder needed for them to fit . I would however describe the Aurion as being a large sedan. It's certainly a lot bigger than most normal sized sedans, and the back seat is huge. I would be very surprised if you were able to get 3 car seats in the back of a Renault. A good test is to put two car seats in the back on each side as you normally would and then try to sit in the middle. If you can sit comfortably then there's a good chance it will fit, but it's also worth bearing in mind that the middle seat is a rearward facing seat, so once my littlest is big enough for a front facing seat I don't like my chances of fitting all 3 in a row, unless I downgrade the Recaros to something less chunky ;)

Ok, that makes sense. Then I still think, what you say, it won't be possible (or very hard) to fit three seats in the back of their car. Thnx for the info!

Happy New Year!! :D

Got a couple of upgrades done on the Aurion over the weekend :)

First thing was the installation of some Euro plate style license plate surrounds and the second was applying some pre-cut tint film to the lower sections of the tail lights. I wasn't 100% happy with the blandness of the plate surround so ended up using some of my left over bronze carbon fiber vinyl to wrap the sides and make it a little more interesting.

Here's some photos of the process and some before vs after shots:

Looks nice! The tint film is bought like this as an after-market 'upgrade' for the Aurion? Is that just stuck over the light units on the outside?
The license plate extension brings a nice detail to the car with the silver fern :) Also funny to see that you want to extend your plate while we in Europe all the time want to decrease the size to get a US-style license plate! haha!

The license plate extension brings a nice detail to the car with the silver fern :) Also funny to see that you want to extend your plate while we in Europe all the time want to decrease the size to get a US-style license plate! haha!
Thanks! Yep, the film was laser cut for these particular tail lights. It just gets stuck on the outside of the lens, and being vinyl they're very easy to remove and apply since they're not sticky. Haha that is pretty funny, just like how a lot of people want the JDM look but a lot of people in Japan want the USDM look!
